Last week, 100YMM‘s chatrooms were on fire as Ms. Monster and her Monster Melons hosted our weekly “Chat-Along” Double Feature Monstercast! 1940s cheesefests The Flying Serpent and The Devil Bat bookended almost four hours of madcap entertainment, featuring prerecorded and live bits by the lovely blue-skinned creature and her green skinned companions, plus trailers, cartoons and government warning films from the ’50s. Prizes were given out every 20 minutes or so and the attendance rivaled the original 3-day marathon that started it all back in March!

So, back by popular demand, Ms. Monster and the melons, “Tit” and “Tat” will be back for A COMPLETELY LIVE HOSTING GIG this Friday night, June 11, at 8PM EST! They’ll be hosting “Crazy People Night”, with a bit of a departure for monster movies, a double feaure of ’70s grindhouse sleazefests Driller Killer and Don’t Look In The Basement!

Writer/Director/Actor Alan Rowe Kelly

As a special added bonus, we’ll be joined LIVE IN-STUDIO by writer/actor/producer/director Alan Rowe Kelly (I’ll Bury You Tomorrow, The Blood Shed), who will be on hand to talk about his upcoming remake of Don’t Look In The Basement! In yet another act of digital calisthenics, Ms. Monster and her team will be interviewing Alan remotely from their set in San Francisco, while Alan sits in the dank, disgusting disheveled pit that is the SphereWerx/Fourth Castle studios in the aptly-named Hicksville, New York!

Friday's prizes

All the usual MONSTERCAST elements will be in play for what could be almost FIVE hours of cheesy goodness: trailers, cartoons, ’50s educational films, trivia and prizes! The two prizes being given away this Friday, in keeping with the ’70s serial killer theme, are the Mezco Cinema of Fear Series 3 “Leatherface” and “Hitchhiker” figures from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

This is shaping up to be the biggest night since the launch of 10YMM, and a bit more adult than usual, as there will be lots of cheap bright-red ’70s gore and perhaps a bit o’nudity, so make sure the kids get to bed on time!

The “door opens” at 7:45PM, when the player/chatroom window goes live on the 100YMM.com homepage. A loop of trailers will cease at 7:50, when classic drive-in “countdown to showtime” films take us right to the start of the show!

Join Ms. Monster, the Melons, Alan Rowe Kelly and thousands of fellow monster movie mavens on Friday night, June 11 at 8:00PM Eastern Time (5:00PM Pacific) at 100yearsofmonstermovies.com (or 100ymm.com if you’re too lazy).

We’re still waiting to get a full report to you all on just how friggin’ HUGE the 100ymm LIVE webcast from Hororhound Weekend was, but the momentum hasn’t stopped!

We’ve continued to run a double feature of monster movies, complete with chat-along, trivia and prizes, EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT AT 8PM EST!

We have a new double feature planned for this Friday, April 16, but we’ll let our partners at Dread Central say it in the report they just released:

First feature Friday 4/16 8PM EST

“A few weeks ago we told you about a cool idea coming from our friends at FearWerx.com, which was a live monster movie marathon webcast all weekend, with hosts doing live intros directly from the Horrorhound Weekend in Indianapolis. It was orginally planned as a one-time-only event to celebrate the 100th birthday of the monster movie, with dozens of hosts that included such big names as Elvira, George Romero and even Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman.

Well, seems like the event was huge enough that they haven’t stopped.

For the last few Fridays at 8:00 PM, the 100 Years of Monster Movies team at FearWerx have ben running a double feature of monster movies, with interacive chat (you can be your own MST3K along with hundreds of other fans), trivia tidbits scrolling across the screen and prizes awarded for answering trivia questions!.

Win this 12" Teenage Werewolf figure from AMOK TIME TOYS!

Though there are no hosts for the show yet, FearWerx President/Executive Producer Joe Sena said that doesn’t mean they won’t come back. The success of the first webcast took us completely by surprise, he said. The fans demanded that we come back with a similar experience, where they can all gather in the caht room and make fun of the movie while it’s on. That seemed to be the biggest part of the experience for them, besides winning prizes. So, for no we’re just running a double feature every Friday night at 8:00pm with chat, prizes, trailers, trivia and more until we can figure out what to do with it.

Looks like we created a monster ourselves, Sena quipped.

The next run is tonight at 8:00PM EST, when the 100 Years of Monster Movies team presents a werewolf-themed night, featuring 1973′s Werewolf of Washington starring Dean Stockwell and the curiosity Wolf Blood, a rare 1925 silent that is purported to be the first werewolf-themed movie ever made. And the big prize for the night is a 12″ action figure of the ‘Teenage Werewolf’ from the movie of the same name by Amok Time Toys.

Join in on the fun, chat with fellow fiends, enjoy some cheesy movies and win prizes tonight at 8:00PM on 100yearsofmonsters.com (or 100ymm.com for the spelling challenged).”

(Thanx to Steve ‘Uncle Creepy’ Barton for the piece)

If you’re reading this, you’re at least one of several types of people:

- A casual fan of monster movies who, after scanning the cable guide, will land on something with a creature in the title, check it out for a few, and, satisfied that it will keep you entertained, leave it on. You may watch the whole thing through, or leave it on “in the background”, only paying attention during a gruesome, bizarre or spectacular sequence. In your Facebook profile, you put “monster movies” or “horror movies” in your interests, but probably after some thought.

- An active fan of monster movies who seeks out titles on cable, VOD or download with a creature of some sort. You consider yourself more of a “horror fan”, not conscious of your preference for rubber or computer generated beasts. Your friends enjoy the genre as well, and it is close to the top of your list of entertainment preferences when asked. Your Halloween costume is more creative than others’, and you either make it yourself or spend a lot of money on the well-made masks, outfits and accessories that are now available.

- A hardcore fan of monster movies, who appreciates the horror genre as a whole but absolutely understands the nuances that separates the monster subgenre. Your extensive DVD collection stretches back to the silents, and you’ve listened to all the commentaries. You wrinkle your nose at CGI SyFy movies but watch them anyway (and refuse to admit that you’ve TiVo’d and rewatched several). You go to conventions. You have a collection of monster figures on a shelf, with even more still in boxes…somewhere. You may even have a tattoo (or several) of your favorite creatures. You bookmarked several of the better known horror sites, or subscribe to their RSS feeds or podcasts. Your coworkers think you’re strange, but you know that they’re the strange ones.

- A professional. You spent most of your life immersing yourself in these films. You learned how to write about them, interviewed their creators, examined their social relevance. You may have even written some screenplays, many of you have had them produced. You may have written a book (or several) on the topic, and some are used as texts in film study classes. Or, you may have leaned toward the visual, graduating from scribbling monsters in your school notebook to applying pieces of rubber to actors to make them look like those same monsters you scribbled. You may have gone from Mathlete to computer FX artist and discovered the best way to make that scaly texture map look more like millions of real scales.

Either way, you’re all here because you’re monster fans and you’re here to celebrate the genre, and we have developed this program specifically so that all of you can share in the celebration.

The purpose of this program: raise awareness of this simultaneously fun and scary subgenre among monster fans of all levels of interest and expertise. There are countless conventions, blogs, toys, games, collectibles, reference books, dvds, reference books, magazines…you may know them all or you may never heard of any of them, but we’re going to do our best to make as many fans aware of as much as possible.

Many of these items are produced by friends we’ve made over the course of 20 years of being in the “fan marketing” business. For some of them, it’s a very lucrative business; for others it’s a hobby. Either way, they all share a passion for this genre, and 100YMM is designed to help connect them with the fans who are seeking them out.

My first copy of FM, issue no. 67 from 1970. Yep, still have it.

For me, it’s part of a personal journey. As a kid reading Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine in the 1970s, my one window into the genre was that magazine. The fabled publication has been written about countless times and there is little I can add to the more eloquent anecdotes of far superior writers except to say that it opened me up to a world of imagination that only made me hungry for more.

In 1974, Famous Monsters ran a convention in New York City and, being local, I was lucky enough to convince my dad to bring me.

This was a pivotal experience.

Many other magazines and books with broader views on the topic were promoted or sold there. Celebrities and production veterans talked about their craft. Actual props and costumes were displayed and their construction talked about by the people who made them. FM’s famous cover paintings were on display and you could get up close and examine the choice of brushstrokes people like Basil Gogos used to create those magical color combinations. Upcoming movies were previewed.

Like many of the other attendees, I went back home with a heart full of the experience of having spent days immersed in the genre, but a head already beginning to calculate how to make a living at it. Surely, not an immature thought, as there were plenty of responsible adults at the show sharing their experiences in writing, directing or creating makeup for movies, publishing magazines, producing lines of model kits and toys.

I saw people who were happy at their respective crafts and other people who enjoyed the fruits of those labors. At the time, I was on the latter side of the equation.

Universal's Monster site, produced and edited by me in 1997, and apparently still accessible in parts at archive.org. Three guesses which magazine inspired the look-and-feel...

Flash forward (gulp) 37 years, and I’m on the other side. I’ve been blessed to run a company with brands that develop toys, collectibles and apparel for fans of the genre. Prior to that, I produced horror events for one of the world’s biggest fan convention companies, developed online monster webzines at the dawn of the internet for Universal Studios as Creative Director of their New Media Group, and launched websites for several other well-known genre media brands, many of which still thrive.

So, when we decided to expand the company back into my old internet career, I felt it important to create something that gave something back to the genre that got me started on this journey. I wanted to provide a platform that was useful for people of all levels of fandom, from the casual fan to the professional.

- The casual fan can use this program to explore the wealth of monster movies reliably, without having to settle for what cable or the local video store rack provides. We started by putting together a list right here (and don’t worry, hardcore fans, it’s just a start).

- The active fan can find ways to expand their expertise in the genre and find other friends around the world who share their passion. We are not opening a 100YMM forum, as there are many well-run message boards that do the job better than we ever could, and many of them can use the support. If we do our job correctly, we will help populate those boards with many new contributors.

- Hardcore fans can flex their expertise and contribute by adding their recommendations for films, products, books, periodicals sites and other items with blog entries, or comments and posts on our Facebook page. We don’t pretend to be editors or experts here, so our primary purpose to the hardcore fan is to encourage them to share their knowledge with others.

- Professionals can consider this program a place to promote their work and help refine the flow of information. In my opinion, the “bad side” of the wealth of information on the internet is that so much of it is conjecture, opinion, or just plain wrong. Here, I call upon the professionals of this genre to contribute their thoughts, provide research-based facts, and help guide the next generation of fans. Feel free to correct us as well, if we present anything erroneously. In exchange, we will pimp the hell out of whatever you’re doing.

As for me, I’m just grateful to be able to develop this program and have fun doing it. In just a few days, we’ll be recreating the classic days of live monster television with a 3 day movie marathon webcast complete with live hosts. A few weeks later, we’re putting on a monster toy display at Monsterpalooza in Burbank. A month later, my former coworkers at Creation Entertainment are letting us run several 100YMM events there such as a kaiju film festival and a monster art gallery at the upcoming Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles.

But if you ask, “Why monsters and not horror in general?” my answer has several parts to it:

1. There is no shortage of general horror information on the web. In no way can we get our arms around anything like that.

2. General horror includes some subgenres that some may consider unsavory or extreme. We certainly appreciate them as well, but it makes an effort like this one largely inaccessible from a beginner’s point of view.

3. Monsters are responsible for getting me on this journey in the first place, and it seemed a good place to start. The 100th anniversary of the Edison Frankenstein film certainly provided us with a great hook, and after decades of legal wrangling, it seems Famous Monsters is returning to legitimate print. And, as I stopped believing in coincidences many years ago, I took it as a thumbs up from the universe.

With that, I welcome you to the 100 Years of Monster Movies celebration, thank you for your time and hope that I can start some of you of on this fantastic journey as well.

Joe Sena

President, SphereWerx/Fourth Castle Micromedia

What is a monster?

Or, what is it about a monster that makes it monstrous?

It’

s not something that most people think about.

But while working to compile a list of monster movies for the “100 Years of Monster Movies” event, I’

ve been prompted to consider this question. Using an internet search engine provides the following results by way of definition:

1. An imaginary creature usually having various human and animal parts.

2. Someone or something that is abnormally large and powerful.

3. A freak: a person or animal that is markedly unusual or deformed.

4. A cruel wicked and inhuman person.

In these modern times, finding resources to help one to define the concept of monstrosity requires one to scroll past results directing you towards products and resources such as energy drinks, equipment cables and job search websites, which provide an interesting insight into the way that the use of the term “monster”

has evolved.

Using the Internet Movie Database as a search engine, results in 1,544 results, 830 of them being movies. But I wonder what kind of criteria they’

re using to determine what makes a monster movie?

“Men in Black”

has a variety of interesting aliens, but is it a monster movie?

The Stay-Puft marshmallow man from “Ghostbusters” is definitely a monster to be reckoned with, but does that make “Ghostbusters”

a monster movie?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is filled with orcs and goblins and walking trees and, of course, the formidable Balrog but does that make the Lord of the Rings series a series of monster movies?

So, while trying to put together a comprehensive list of monster movies from the past 100 years, I’

ve hit this not inconsiderable barrier. So I ask you this, and any and all replies and ensuing discussions would be most appreciated.

What makes a monster movie a monster movie?

The 100 Years of Monster Movies program will make its second tour stop at Eliot Brodsky’s Monsterpalooza Convention, April 9-11 at the Burbank Airport Marriott. It’s a unique event among horror conventions in that it especially focuses on monsters and their makers. It’s chock full of eye candy, such as actual props and costumes and makeup effects from some of Hollywood’s most famous monster movies.

The best way to see all the fun of Monsterpalooza is to do so through the eyes of veteran character actor and Big Time Monster Kid Dan Roebuck in this clip from last year’s show:

The 100 Years of Monster Movies program is participating in Monsterpalooza with a number of special events for monster fans:

A monster toy exhibit, featuring toys old and new, including prototypes of upcoming Universal Monster figures from Diamond Select Toys and our own EMCE Toys brand

A display of memorabilia from the 1925 version of The Phantom of the Opera from the private collection of Joe Sena.

For older Monster Kids, there will be a cash bar and special Monster-ized drink specials just after the Return of the Living Dead cast reunion.

Our FearWerx brand is an official sponsor of the event, represented by our West Coast show manager Jack Ulrich, bringing loads of the apparel and merch designs we’re known for.

For more information on the event, go to the official Monsterpalooza website, and check out the promo below:
